St. Julians High School Old Boys Rugby Club, commonly referred to as St. Julians HSOB RFC, is a historic rugby club located in Newport, New Zealand. Although the exact inception date of the club is not clear, it is known that a centenary celebration was arranged following the success of the 50th year anniversary in 1974.
The club was initially situated in Malpas Road as a section of St. Julian's Old Boys' Social Club.
The club experienced significant changes in its early years. In 1970, the clubhouse closed, leading to a breakaway led by Bob Garvey, who, at the age of 21, became the youngest recorded chairman. The club temporarily moved to Palmyra Place before finding meeting venues in various hostelries such as the King William, the Actors Club, the Aqua Club, the Hanbury, and the Hereford Arms. Eventually, with the support of the Sports Council and Courage Brewery, and under the current chairmanship of Brian Charles, the club built its present premises at the Glebelands Stadium in 1982.
Throughout its history, the club has maintained a close affiliation with St. Julian's High School, from which it derives its name. Many significant figures have passed through the club, with some being remembered with great affection. Notably, Bob Sadler was declined as a club chairman because he did not belong to the “Old School,” showcasing how times have changed.
The club has also produced talented players who have gone on to play in first-class games and join renowned rugby clubs such as Abertillery, Cardiff, Cross Keys, Newbridge, Neath, Newport, and Pontypool.
The future of St. Julians HSOB RFC looks bright, with the club's commitment, determination, and character steering its progress. The club's colours may depend on the status of sponsors, but its members are poised to go forward with passion and resilience. St.
Julians HSOB RFC offers teams for various age groups and has a shop, video, and gallery sections on its website. As a member of the Welsh Rugby Union, the club continues to make its mark in the sport.
