Hoi Kuen Do - Way of the Open Fist

Hoi Kuen Do – Way of the Open Fist is a martial arts school located in Newport, New Zealand. Developed by Sifu Wayne Taylor, HKD is a “non-classical” system that draws from his experience training in Chinese fighting arts, but without being limited to a specific style. With over forty years of training, HKD has evolved to include effective aspects of various global martial arts, making it a modern and practical martial art system.

HKD is not just a combat system but also a philosophy that applies to all beliefs, thoughts, and consciousness. It offers a way for individuals to transform through self-observation and challenges them to break down mental constructs and limiting beliefs. The physical work of HKD strengthens the body, while the internal work strengthens the mind.

The school is located at Newport MMA on Kelvedon Street in Newport. Classes are offered on Sundays from 5pm to 6:30pm for children and from 6:30pm to 8:30pm for adults. There is also an additional class on Wednesdays from 7:00pm to 8:30pm for adults. Private lessons are available upon request, and interested individuals can contact the school directly to discuss their needs and availability.

Hoi Kuen Do offers classes for every level, and each class is structured to provide individual attention to students. The lessons are based on three pillars: Movement, Martial Arts, and the Mind. To fully understand the HKD system, it is important to develop proficiency in all three areas.

The Movement pillar focuses on natural movement patterns that are essential for overall health and well-being. The practise includes locomotive skills such as crawling, jumping, and running, as well as callisthenics and yoga exercises to improve conditioning, strength, and control over the body and emotions.

The Martial Arts pillar of HKD draws from Chinese arts but does not adhere to a specific style. It incorporates efficient and explosive techniques such as punches, open-hand strikes, elbows, kicks, throws, wrestling, and grappling. HKD is designed to complement each individual's strengths and is a practical martial art for the modern day.

At Hoi Kuen Do, the journey of studying HKD is emphasised as a lifelong process. Mastery is not the goal, but rather consistent, hard, and quality work is required to achieve a successful understanding of the system.
