The Crawley Mariners Yacht Club in East Grinstead is excited to announce that they are offering RYA Navigation Theory courses for individuals who want to enhance their navigation skills and safety knowledge. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced sailor or powerboater, these courses are perfect for you.
Our first course, the Essential Navigation and Seamanship Course, is designed to introduce newcomers to navigation and safety in coastal waters and harbours like Chichester. In this course, you will learn about charts and publications, safety, buoyage, tidal awareness, visual and electronic navigation, pilotage, rules of the road, anchoring, weather forecasts, and passage planning. It requires a minimum of 16 hours and can be presented at our CMYC clubhouse or online. The course fee includes all necessary course materials and books.
For those looking for a more comprehensive course, we offer the Day Skipper Theory Course. This course provides an in-depth introduction to chartwork navigation, meteorology, and the basics of seamanship. It is designed to help you make informed decisions onboard and is a prerequisite for the Day Skipper practical course and yacht chartering. With a minimum of 40 hours of study, including homework exercises and exam time, this course covers seamanship, coastal navigation and pilotage, chartwork, electronic charts, position fixing, weather forecasting and meteorology, tides, and collision regulations. Just like the first course, it can be presented at our clubhouse or online, and all course materials and books are included in the fee.
For those aspiring to become Coastal Skippers or Yachtmaster Offshore, we offer the Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Offshore Theory Course. This course builds upon the knowledge gained in the Day Skipper shorebased course and covers advanced skills in offshore and coastal navigation by day and night, pilotage, meteorology, and more. It also requires a minimum of 40 hours of study, including homework exercises and exam time. The course is presented either at our clubhouse or online, and course materials and books are provided.
If you are interested in any of these courses, please reach out to our Chief Navigation Instructor via the provided contact page. They will be able to provide you with all the course fees and additional details upon inquiry. Please note that the Day Skipper Theory Course is only open to club members.
