For 2024, Crawley Mariners Yacht Club is excited to introduce the new ‘Have a go racing’ sessions. These sessions are all about creating a relaxed and friendly environment for those looking to dip their toes into the world of racing. Whether you’re a seasoned sailor or just starting out, these sessions are open to all. Parents are also encouraged to join in on the fun if their children are taking part.
To ensure everyone feels comfortable and confident on the water, a race coach/instructor will be on hand to provide support and answer any questions before and after the session. A briefing will cover the basics of racing rules, ensuring everyone knows who has the right of way and giving guidance on the course layout.
Experienced sailors are welcome to join in and are encouraged to embody the ‘relaxed and friendly’ ethos by offering help and even crewing for those in need. If you find yourself without a crew, not to worry, arrangements will be made on the day to pair you up.
The session format is designed to be flexible, with either three races lasting around 20 minutes each (a couple of laps per race) or two races lasting 30 minutes each. The first race is set to kick off on [insert date and time], with the aim to have everyone off the water by [insert time].
Club boats will be available for those who have achieved Level 2 or Stage 2, or an equivalent standard. If you’ve learned how to rig and sail a boat, most likely at a Saturday Club, then you’re good to go. Details on how to book these sessions will be provided closer to the date to ensure we can match up helms and crews accordingly.
