Suburbs Rugby Football Club Inc, also known as Suburbs, is a prominent rugby club located in the bustling city of Auckland, New Zealand. With a rich history dating back to 1916, Suburbs has been a pillar of the local rugby community for over a century.
The club was founded on a farmer's paddock in New Lynn, where a group of enthusiastic 16-year-old boys came together to form a team and play their first match against a club from Waikumete. Despite losing the initial game, their passion for rugby continued to grow, and they decided to enter the Auckland Rugby Development (ARD) championships the following year.
In 1917, the club underwent organisational changes and officially became the “New Lynn Rugby Football Club” under the sponsorship of the Railway Club. Training sessions were held in farm paddocks and the president's cow shed, demonstrating the club's humble beginnings.
However, it wasn't until 1918, during a lively “annual meeting” in a local barber shop, that the club adopted the name Suburbs. The decision was influenced by the fact that players from various suburbs surrounding New Lynn joined the club, making it a true community team. That same year, the Avondale Jockey Club generously offered Suburbs a permanent home.
Suburbs' club colours were established as red and blue, with 4" hoops in alternating colours. Although the desired jerseys were initially unavailable, the club played their first two seasons in yellow and black jerseys. Since then, Suburbs has proudly sported their iconic red and blue hoops.
Fast-forward to the present day, Suburbs Rugby Football Club Inc continues to thrive as a well-respected and successful rugby club in Auckland. The club caters to all ages and skill levels, offering junior rugby programmes as well as senior teams competing at a high level in various leagues.
Suburbs is more than just a rugby clubit's a community. The club serves as a gathering place where members can come together to socialise, support their teams, and share their love for the sport. The clubrooms at Shabolt Park, located at 130-200 Portage Road in New Lynn, Auckland, serve as the headquarters for Suburbs.
