Stanhope Pool is a community-led charity venture that was established in 1974. It is the only heated open-air swimming pool in County Durham, located amidst the picturesque North-Pennine hills. The pool is run and maintained by dedicated volunteers and receives financial support from Durham County Council, the Weardale Area Action Partnership, and generous donations from patrons.
The pool is currently closed due to failed safety tests and the need for essential refurbishment. Efforts are underway to purchase the freehold and secure funds for the necessary renovations, ensuring a bright future for Stanhope Pool.
Stanhope Pool is a seasonal open-air facility that spans an impressive 25 × 13 metres. It offers a unique experience, especially in an era dominated by homogenised leisure centres. The main pool is heated to a comfortable temperature of 27C (82F). One standout feature is the presence of a springboard, creating a progressive depth change from 1 metre to 3 metres.
For younger children who are not yet ready for the main pool, there is a smaller pool available. This pool is also heated to the same temperature and includes a small slide, but has a shallower depth of half a metre. Additionally, the premises feature a café area with a sauna, which is primarily accessible through private bookings. Visitors can also enjoy a snack shop that offers a range of refreshments and other pool-related items like dive toys, armbands, and goggles.
Stanhope Pool has a structured timetable and admission policy to cater to various needs. Pre-booking options are available for visitors, with any remaining tickets available for purchase at the door. There are specific guidelines in place for children aged 8 and under, requiring them to be accompanied by a responsible adult aged 16 or above. The ratio of supervision should not exceed 1 adult to 2 children.
For children under the age of 4, the ratio is set at 1 adult to 1 child, unless all children are wearing appropriate buoyancy aids, in which case the ratio becomes 1 adult to 2 children.
The facility enforces a set of rules to ensure a safe and enjoyable environment for all visitors. This includes discouraging rough, boisterous, or sexualised behaviour, as well as spitting, shouting, swearing, fighting, bullying, and running on the poolside. Smoking and alcohol consumption are not permitted within the premises.
Visitors are reminded to heed all signs within the facility for their safety and to show respect to the staff who are diligently performing their duties.
Stanhope Pool is a unique swimming destination that offers a community-driven experience like no other. With its picturesque location and commitment to providing a safe and enjoyable environment, it is truly a gem in Bishop Auckland's swimming scene.
