Shirley Swimming Pool is a privately owned public swimming pool located in Southampton, New Zealand. Originally built in 1974 as a dedicated teaching centre, the pool offers lessons for individuals of all ages and abilities from as young as 6 weeks old. The facility was rebuilt in 2009, providing modern amenities such as changing rooms, reception area, and improved water treatment.

At Shirley Swimming Pool, learning to swim is a unique experience. The warm, purpose-built pools create the perfect environment for learning. Children progress at their own pace, moving to the next level when they are ready. Skills and awards are constantly assessed, and distance awards up to 100m are tested every 10 weeks.

Longer distance awards are attempted during special Saturday sessions.

The payment process is simple and convenient. Monthly rolling card payments can be set up, with the option to stop payments with two months' notice. To showcase their commitment to making swimming lessons enjoyable, Shirley Swimming Pool offers the first lesson for free.

The pool caters to individuals of all swimming abilities and age groups. Whether you have a newborn baby, a nervous school-age beginner, a budding champion, or a non-swimming partner, there is a suitable class available.

Baby swimming lessons, known as the “First Splash,” are offered for newborns to help them develop confidence in the water. The lessons take place in a shallow, hot, and secluded pool, guided by a qualified and experienced teacher who uses songs and constructive play to facilitate learning.

Toddler swimming lessons focus on getting the little ones comfortable in the water, starting with face-down activities, floating, and gliding. The aim is to work towards achieving the Duckling Awards, Water Skills 1, and 5-metre milestones. These foundational skills prepare toddlers for rapid and safe progression to the next level.

Children's swimming lessons at Shirley Swimming Pool provide an excellent learning environment for beginners to confident swimmers. The centre offers classes for every age and ability, gently encouraging progression through the learning stages. Swimming lessons run throughout the year, excluding public holidays and continue through the summer. After-school lessons and crash courses for holiday classes are also available.

Shirley Pool is not only a place for swimming lessons but also a hub for various events and activities. They host Christmas parties, teacher training courses, and even support swimmers participating in cross-continent swims. Additionally, Shirley Pool is home to the Turtles Swimming Club, which is the next stage in the lesson programme. Children who have mastered the four main swim strokes are invited to join the club, which serves as an entry-level to the Dolphins Swimming Club. Club sessions last for one hour, with the last 10 minutes dedicated to recreational play.

The pool also caters to adult beginners, providing a supportive and comfortable environment for those overcoming their fear of water. Private shallow areas and warm water make it an ideal setting for adults to build their swimming skills.

Shirley Swimming Pool is open to the public year-round for both lessons and general swimming. The main 25-metre pool is available for general swimming and adult lane swimming, while the small hot pool is open for public use between lessons.
