Elements to be crowned champions of the Centenary Cup. Well done to both of them!
Selborne Bowling Club, located in the heart of Southgate, London, is a vibrant and friendly club with a rich history dating back to its establishment in 1912 by Bert Plumb, the landlord of the famous Ye Olde Cherry Tree. Situated in an oasis of peace and calm behind the pub, Selborne is a haven for lawn bowl enthusiasts of all experience levels.
The club welcomes both seasoned bowlers and beginners alike, with free coaching sessions available throughout the year. Equipment for practise sessions is provided, ensuring that new members can easily partake in the sport. Open Days are traditionally held in early May, but individuals are welcome to visit and try out the facilities at any time. Thursday evenings and Sunday mornings are particularly ideal for newcomers, as these times offer casual roll-up sessions where members can relax and socialise while honing their bowling skills.
Selborne Bowling Club offers a well-maintained bowling green, open from mid-April until the end of September. Members have access to the green at any time, except when it is being used for maintenance, matches, or organised play. Weekly coaching sessions, provided for free, offer a chance to improve skills and receive guidance from experienced members. To preserve the quality of the green, members are required to wear flat-soled shoes.
The club boasts an active schedule of League and Friendly Matches against local clubs, as well as its own League and Cup Competitions. Roll-up sessions take place on Wednesday and Sunday mornings, as well as Thursday evenings, providing opportunities for both new and experienced bowlers to engage in friendly competition. Additionally, Thursday nights are designated as Club Nights during summer, where members come together to share a meal after the roll-up session.
Apart from the sporting aspect, Selborne Bowling Club places importance on fostering a strong sense of community. Various social activities are organised throughout the year, including quizzes, games nights, bridge, whist, and theatre trips. These events provide members with opportunities to relax, socialise, and forge new friendships.
Membership at Selborne Bowling Club covers a full calendar year and offers different options tailored to each individual's level of involvement. Full Playing Membership is priced at 150, while New Playing Membership is priced at 100. Those seeking a more social experience can opt for Social Membership at 30.
Selborne Bowling Club takes pride in its efforts to support charitable causes. The club's annual Macmillan Coffee Morning event has successfully raised 6000 over the years, thanks to the generous support of members and attendees.
The club also pays tribute to its members. A bench has been dedicated to the memory of Gaynor Dando, a beloved member who represented Selborne in numerous matches and competitions. This gesture serves as a reminder of the club's tight-knit community and the lasting impact individuals can have on the Selborne Bowling Club family.
