Are you the owner of Palmerston North School of Karate?

The Palmerston North School of Karate, also known as PNSK, is one of the oldest karate clubs in the region, with a rich history dating back to the late 1960s. What sets PNSK apart is that it is the only karate club in Palmerston North with a permanent dojo, a training hall, which has been in operation since 2001. In 2008, PNSK even built a purpose-built dojo dedicated solely to karate.
PNSK offers traditional Japanese karate classes for individuals of all ages, starting from 6 years old and extending to senior citizens. Rest assured, all instructors at PNSK have undergone Police Vetting to ensure the safety and security of all students. The club has a strong membership base and enjoys immense support from parents and guardians.
So why learn karate? There are numerous reasons why people of all genders and ages gravitate towards this martial art. Apart from being a safe and healthy means of self-defence, karate has been proven to enhance fitness levels, flexibility, agility, confidence, and self-awareness. By combining kicking, punching, striking, and blocking techniques, karate taps into a comprehensive range of martial arts skills.
Recognised globally as one of the most effective self-defence systems, karate has evolved over the course of 400 years since its origins in Okinawa, Japan.
At PNSK, the approach to teaching karate is simple yet powerful: “train hard, do your best, and no excuses. ” With over 40 years of karate experience, instructor Gregor McLachlan is one of the most accomplished karate practitioners in New Zealand. He boasts an impressive track record of 16 National titles (Karate NZ), Australian open titles, Oceania Championship achievements, and a 5th place finish at a World Championship. In addition to his personal accolades, McLachlan has also served as the captain of the New Zealand national team, leading them to their first successful team win against South Africa.
His coaching career includes guiding the New Zealand Cadets to victory in the 2005 Commonwealth Karate Championship. As a member of the Karate NZ National Coaching Council, McLachlan's expertise is invaluable.
PNSK specialises in teaching Wado Ryu Karate, a traditional Japanese style that focuses on speed, evasion, and simplicity. The club is affiliated with Japan JKF Wado Kai, ensuring the authenticity and integrity of their teachings. Wado Ryu emphasises body shifting, holding, throwing, and sweeping techniques, which possess powerful applications in self-defence. PNSK regularly hosts seminars with senior Japanese instructors to further enhance the skills of their students.
In New Zealand, there are approximately 120 traditional karate club members, and PNSK is proud to be a part of this community. Karate NZ is an organisation that promotes the growth and development of karate, maintaining a national standard for competition. Worldwide, karate boasts around 45-50 million practitioners, highlighting its global popularity and relevance.

When it comes to classes, PNSK offers traditional Wado-Ryu Karate training. All lessons are designed to allow students to learn at a suitable pace and develop correct techniques. Repetition plays a key role in helping the body and mind to execute natural and spontaneous movements. PNSK emphasises the importance of quality over speed in grading students, with gradings held 2–3 times per year based on individual progress.
Students only proceed to the next grading when they can perform the required syllabus at a high standard and demonstrate a positive attitude towards training.
Training fees at PNSK start from $110 per term, depending on the number of nights per week one trains. The term aligns with the school term and spans 10 weeks. PNSK also offers family discounts for second or third students residing in the same household. Additional fees may apply for Karate NZ competitor registration, gradings, squad trainings, and specific clothing or etiquette requirements.
With its rich history, dedicated instructors, and commitment to traditional Japanese karate, the Palmerston North School of Karate offers a holistic and enriching experience for individuals seeking to learn and master this ancient martial art.
