Hey Sports Community,
John, the organiser, wanted to share some exciting information about a local gem for climbers: Netherton Edge, or as the locals call it, “Devil's Rock.” Nestled in the Huddersfield area, it boasts a series of short gritstone buttresses right along the south-facing rim of the valley between Netherton and Honley. It is not the largest climbing venue around, but it's definitely a spot worth exploring if you’re nearby.
One of the highlights of Netherton Edge is its stunning setting; you'll get some of the most breathtaking views in the Huddersfield area, with ancient woodland as your backdrop. This woodland is a designated Site of Scientific Interest. However, do note that sometimes the experience is dampened by litter left behind. John encourages everyone to bring bin bags and take part in keeping the area clean.
Despite this minor inconvenience, the climbing routes here are top-notch. The main attraction, Devil's Rock, offers some challenging climbs like Naked Anus and Satan. The west face of Devil's Rock is known for its excellent rock quality, while other spots might be a bit brittle and require extra care.
For more detailed info, John recommends checking out Paul Perkins' 2002 guidebook “Huddersfield Area: Climbing and Bouldering Guide.” There’s also some interesting content recorded by Jonathan Booth in 2008 further along Netherton Woodland.
You can access Netherton Edge from Netherton Fold, where Scar Top Lane leads you eastwards towards Hinchliffe's Farm Shop on Netherton Moor Road. Alternatively, a scenic route from the Farm Shop itself will bring you to the edge. When you reach the old hamlet of Netherton Edge, follow the valley rim past the last house for 200 paces to arrive at Devil’s Rock. Further along, you’ll discover more climbing opportunities with additional buttresses.
For those keen on details, downloadable PDF topo guides are available, complete with photos and videos of the routes—perfect for getting a full picture before you set out.
In summary, Netherton Edge offers a unique and scenic climbing experience. John highly recommends it to locals and visitors alike. Have a great climb!
Cheers,
