Movement and Health is a Pilates studio and alternative medicine practitioner located in Brighton, New Zealand. Led by Jan Davies, a highly qualified and experienced Pilates instructor, the studio offers a range of classes and therapies to promote movement and overall health.
Jan's journey with Pilates began in 1999 when her physiotherapist recommended it as part of her rehabilitation for serious chronic back problems and other health issues. Impressed by the improvements it made in her body, Jan made the life-changing decision to become a full-time Pilates instructor. Since then, she has never looked back and finds great joy in teaching every class, as well as the sense of gratitude that comes from helping her clients.
Jan is a member of the Body Control Pilates Association and holds various qualifications, including a BSc, MSc, and MBA from Warwick University. In addition to Pilates, she is also trained in body massage, Indian head massage, and the Bowen Technique. She is a full member of the Bowen Therapists Professional Association (BTPA) and finds great reward in therapy work, especially when clients report significant improvements in their conditions.
Prior to her career in Pilates and alternative medicine, Jan spent 15 years in the corporate world, working in sales, marketing, training, business management, and consultancy. This change in direction allowed her to pursue her passion for helping others through movement and complementary healing therapies.
Jan has undergone extensive training for her Body Control Pilates qualifications, working with esteemed teachers such as Lynne Robinson, head of the Body Control Pilates Association, and Paul Anthony McLinden. She continues to expand her knowledge and expertise by attending courses and classes in various disciplines, such as gyrotonics and spiritual healing.
Jan has been teaching Body Control Pilates since September 2001, initially in Hampshire (Winchester) and later expanding to Brighton. She teaches classes of up to 12 people, as well as small groups and offers one-on-one sessions, including home visits. Her classes are tailored to suit the needs of individuals, and she integrates the use of equipment, such as weights, magic circles, foam rollers, poles, and balls, to provide an extra challenge to core stability and stamina.
At Movement and Health, Jan prides herself on her honesty, professionalism, high level of integrity, and sense of humour. She creates a supportive and inclusive environment where clients can feel comfortable and empowered on their wellness journey.
In addition to her Pilates teachings, Jan has also attended courses offered by the Body Control Pilates Association, including Back 4 Good, which focuses on preventing and managing back pain.
