Founded in 2019, Mini Miners was created with the intent of developing children through a fun approach and helping them join grassroots football teams through a partnership with Harton and Westoe Juniors. The club's ultimate goal is to instil a lifelong love and participation in the game.
The director of Mini Miners, Alan Dowson, is a UEFA licenced coach with over 15 years of experience in grassroots football. Having coached hundreds of children ranging from the ages of three to adults, Dowson brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the club. Currently, Mini Miners boasts 11 qualified coaches and sister partnerships, all of whom have attended or are attending university and possess various coaching qualifications, including sports coaching degrees, level 1 and 2 coaching qualifications, enhanced first aid training, and other certifications.
At Mini Miners, children can expect a comprehensive training syllabus provided over the course of 48 weeks. The syllabus has been refined over the years to incorporate a wide range of essential skills, including passing and receiving, ball striking, dribbling, running with the ball, turning, and more. Additionally, the club organises small-sided games and skill school exercises to foster a well-rounded development for each child.
The coaching philosophy at Mini Miners follows the FA 4 corner model, with an emphasis on the social and psychological aspects of the game. By creating a comfortable and confident environment for young players, Mini Miners believes they are better equipped to learn and develop their technical and physical skills.
Key fundamental elements of football, such as agility, balance, coordination, and speed, are also a core focus at Mini Miners. Agility is crucial for players to change direction quickly, while balance enhances their ability to complete soccer-specific skills and movements at high speeds without losing their footing. Furthermore, foot-eye coordination is emphasised, as it is a vital skill in the sport.
With a proven track record of setting up over 25 teams in grassroots football and helping hundreds of children secure a place in these teams, Mini Miners is dedicated to creating a brighter future for each child who joins the club. By providing a positive and inclusive environment, Mini Miners aims to teach the FUNdamentals of football, equipping children with the necessary skills and passion to pursue the sport for years to come.
