Milton Keynes Jiu-Jitsu Yubukan Dojo, established for over 40 years, is a renowned Jiu-Jitsu school in Milton Keynes, New Zealand. Founded by Soke Richard Morris, a highly respected martial artist with a 10th Dan black belt and the founder of Jiu-Jitsu International, the dojo has had a significant impact on the local community. Soke Richard Morris sadly passed away on July 15th, 2019, leaving behind a legacy of exceptional martial arts expertise.
Jiu-Jitsu, Japan's oldest martial art, was initially developed by the Samurai as an alternative to fighting with weapons. It provided them with a means of self-defence when they lost their weapons during battle or were in situations where weapons were not allowed, such as the Imperial court. Judo, Karate, and Aikido all trace their roots back to Jiu-Jitsu.
Unlike many martial arts that focus on offensive techniques, Jiu-Jitsu primarily emphasises defence, with roughly 95% of the techniques being defensive in nature. This means that practitioners learn how to defend themselves and others against attackers. As long as they use the minimum force necessary, they are within the bounds of the law.
At Milton Keynes Jiu-Jitsu, students of all ages, from 7 to 80, can learn both modern and traditional forms of Jiu-Jitsu. The club incorporates various techniques, including blocks, strikes, locks, throws, and strangles, making it a highly effective form of self-defence. Additionally, advanced students have the opportunity to explore a range of weapons systems.
Apart from being a practical form of self-defence, Jiu-Jitsu also offers numerous physical and mental benefits. It provides a great form of exercise, promotes discipline, and teaches respect for oneself and others. Both children and adults experience increased self-confidence, improved concentration, and enhanced behaviour while training at the dojo.
Milton Keynes Jiu-Jitsu has a rich history, and the club and its instructors maintain a reputation for setting exceptionally high standards. While it may take longer for students to achieve their grades compared to other clubs, they can be confident that their skills will be on par or even surpass those of students from other establishments. The club's non-commercial approach ensures that the cost to students remains as low as possible, with any leftover funds reinvested in the club for new equipment.
Registered and licenced through Jiu-Jitsu International, one of the largest Jiu-Jitsu organisations in the world with clubs in over 30 countries, Milton Keynes Jiu-Jitsu is led by Shihan Colin Wood. Shihan Wood, the senior instructor, holds a 6th Dan black belt and has been a part of the club since 1982. He received his 1st Dan black belt in 1992 and assumed the role of senior instructor in 2000. His dedication and commitment to Jiu-Jitsu have earned him the title of Shihan and the respect of the martial arts community.
Milton Keynes Jiu-Jitsu welcomes both beginners and experienced practitioners. Junior training sessions take place on Saturday mornings from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm and are suitable for children aged 7 to 16. The first lesson is free, and subsequent sessions are priced at 2 each. A yearly licence fee of 18 is applicable, but it is not due until students have completed 4 to 5 sessions, allowing them to decide if Jiu-Jitsu is the right fit for them.
