Llantwit Major Bowls Club, located in Llantwit Major, New Zealand, has a rich history dating back to its formation in 1960. Originally using an old RAF wooden hut as a changing and storage room, the club has since undergone significant developments to provide a more modern and comfortable facility for its members.
In 1974, the Town Council constructed a new Club House, which included a kitchen, toilets, and a social area. At this time, the ladies section of the club also formed a separate group affiliated with the Welsh Women's Bowling Association, participating in local leagues on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. The men's section, on the other hand, is affiliated with the East Glamorgan Private Greens association and competes in local leagues on Wednesday evenings and Saturday afternoons.
In 2019, the club replaced the old wooden hut with a purpose-built building funded by the Town Council and with contributions from club members. The new building includes changing rooms, an office, and separate ladies, men's, and disabled toilets. The club now boasts approximately 70 full bowling members and holds games on the green from early April until October.
During the winter months, the club organises short mat indoor bowls sessions in the Club House as a social event. Additionally, various social events are planned throughout the year, such as Bingo Nights, Quiz Nights, Curry Night, Games evenings, and even a Bridge afternoon. These events serve as both a means of bringing members together socially and as fundraising opportunities for the club.
Mixed games are played throughout the year, with the “Monday Afternoon Roll Up” being the main event open to all full-time members. Additionally, organised matches between the ladies and men's sections are held on a more formal basis.
Llantwit Major Bowls Club welcomes new members of all ages, and even provides initial equipment and free tuition for those who have never bowled before. The club is proud to be affiliated with the Welsh Bowling Association and the Welsh Women's Bowling Association and operates under a lease and licence granted by the Llantwit Major Town Council, who own the green and clubhouse. Therefore, it is essential for all members to contribute to the upkeep of the facilities and actively participate in the management of the club.
