La Muse

La Muse Dance School is a dance school located in Invercargill, New Zealand. Established in 2009, La Muse offers a wide range of dance styles including classical ballet, jazz, tap, hip hop, contemporary dance, acrobatics, musical theatre, aerobics, and pre-school classes. Owned and operated by Hana Skeggs and Gina Stevens, the school aims to provide high-quality tuition in a friendly and supportive environment.

The studio is conveniently located in central Invercargill and features three purpose-built studio rooms. These rooms are equipped with the necessary dance floors and equipment to ensure students can learn and practise their skills comfortably.

The dance classes at La Muse cater to students of all ages and skill levels. For classical ballet, the school proudly offers classes from the Royal Academy of Dance. This internationally recognised syllabus ensures that students receive a comprehensive and safe training method from qualified teachers who continuously update their skills and knowledge.

Jazz dance at La Muse is influenced by two different syllabi. The DanceNZmade programme, created by 'Danceman' Dean McKerras, brings high energy and fun to the dance floor, while the American Jazz Dance Affiliation (AJDA) syllabus focuses on style, technique, flexibility, and performance.

Contemporary dance is taught using the syllabus from the New Zealand Association of Modern Dance (NZAMD). This style emphasises concepts such as weight, flow, momentum, and the use of gravity, allowing students to explore freedom of movement and spatial awareness.

For the little ones, La Muse offers pre-school classes called Baby Stars and Stars. These classes, designed for 3-5 year olds, introduce the basics of ballet in a creative and enjoyable way. Students learn positions of the feet and arms, timing, musicality, and develop gross motor skills like skipping, hopping, jumping, and leaping. These pre-school classes provide a solid foundation for students to progress into the examination levels.

La Muse also offers acrobatic arts classes, where students learn gymnastics-based skills that enhance their flexibility, strength, and coordination.
