The course at Kingarrock has undergone slight tweaks to its original design and layout to meet modern safety needs. Previously, the course had holes that crossed each other, leading to players shouting “fore” and dodging flying balls. Kingarrock takes pride in its unique environment, which combines historically inspired groundsmanship with modern touches. Sheep grazing can be seen among the rough, and the greens and collars are hand-cut, while fairways and tees are meticulously mowed using 1920s-style trailed gangs.
Kingarrock's commitment to authenticity is evident as they do not use fertilisers or artificial irrigation on the course, giving it a more natural and unmanicured feel compared to other courses.
Aside from providing an exceptional golfing experience, Kingarrock also prioritises ecology. The course boasts an impressive level of biodiversity, with wildflowers such as marsh orchid, lady's bedstraw, cuckooflower, and ox-eye daisy spreading across the course, attracting numerous bumblebees. Tussocky grasses support a population of field voles and tawny owls, while the gorse on the course provides shelter for yellowhammers seeking refuge from swooping sparrowhawks. Additionally, Kingarrock has initiated tree planting efforts, reintroducing species such as sessile oak, pedunculate oak, European beech, horse chestnut, copper beech, and sweet chestnut, some of which have been absent for a century.
The course at Kingarrock features several challenging elements to put players' skills to the test. It includes three bunkers of varying depths and a water feature known as the cundy, which adds an extra level of difficulty and strategic thinking to each round.
Kingarrock Hickory Golf is a must-visit for golf enthusiasts looking for a nostalgic and authentic golfing experience.
