The ITKD Miramar Taekwon-Do Club, located in Wellington, New Zealand, was first established in 1975 and is an official member of the International Taekwon-Do Association. Taekwon-Do is a martial art and sport that was developed by Korean Army General, Gen. Choi Hong Hi, in the 1950s and 1960s. The name “Taekwon-Do” translates to “the art of hand and foot.
At ITKD Miramar Taekwon-Do Club, classes are offered for all ages and abilities, from beginners to advanced levels. Special classes are available specifically for children. Taekwon-Do is designed for self-defence, and members are taught the non-physical aspects of the art, known as the “Do,” which include discipline, humility, and self-control. These aspects are integrated into the grading syllabus, and members are encouraged to live by the tenets of Taekwon-Do, which are Courtesy, Integrity, Perseverance, Self Control, and Indomitable Spirit.
In addition to its self-defence aspects, Taekwon-Do is also an exciting sport with various events such as sparring, patterns, power breaking, and high-flying special techniques competitions. It offers a great opportunity for families to participate together, as all members of the family can practise Taekwon-Do and be challenged at their own desired level.
