Warm and welcoming community. The Huntingdon Radio Yacht Club (HRYC) is a sailing club located in St. Ives, New Zealand. The club was established to provide a platform for owners of Radio Controlled (RC) yachts to come together and enjoy the sport of sailing and racing.
At HRYC, members have the opportunity to sail and race a variety of yachts, including the DF95 and International One Metre (IOM) classes. The DF95 is a great entry-level boat for beginners, while the IOM is a popular class sailed all over the world and offers a high level of competition. These boats, when set up correctly, provide both fun and competitiveness on the water.
The club prides itself on being a “fun and competition” club, where members of all skill levels can find support and assistance. Whether you're new to RC sailing or a seasoned sailor, HRYC offers help, guidance, and training to enhance your skills and enjoyment of the sport.
Huntingdon RYC has experienced significant growth in recent years, starting with just two members and now attracting a growing number of enthusiasts every month. The club embraces a handicapping start system, allowing beginners to compete with more experienced sailors on a level playing field. This system encourages skill development and friendly competition among members.
Sailing takes place on an open lake, offering ample space for races and recreational sailing. Each week, buoys are strategically placed for racing, adding a purposeful element to the sailing experience. The nature of the boats sailed at HRYC ensures that racing is tight and highly competitive, as there is minimal difference between the performance of the yachts. Winning races ultimately comes down to individual skill and expertise.
Huntingdon RYC made a recent move from its original location in Brampton to the picturesque Hunts Sailing Club in St. Ives. The new location has proven to be an excellent fit for the club, providing access to a superb body of water and top-notch facilities. Members enjoy stunning views and ideal wind conditions from the Spit, ensuring a pleasurable and engaging sailing experience.
The club's partnership with Hunts Sailing Club has fostered a close-knit community atmosphere, with some members actively participating in both clubs. Hunts Sailing Club offers a range of amenities, including male and female toilets, on-site parking, storage for equipment, mooring for recovery craft, a launching pontoon, and access to the galley during open meetings.
