Highfields Football Club Inc. is a soccer club located in Highfields, Australia. The club has a rich history, with soccer being played by players from the Highfields area for many years. The Cawdor Rangers were the first team to play in the Toowoomba and district football competition during the 1950s, with some players going on to represent Queensland.
The idea of forming a Highfields “Soccer” Club came about when Helen and Noel Oldham wanted their son Stephen Oldham to play soccer. At the time, rugby was the only local sport available. After discussing the idea with Barry Franke, a meeting was called to gauge interest from the local community. Approximately 30 people attended the meeting, resulting in the formation of the Highfields Club.
The first executive positions were held by Noel Oldham as President, Barry Franke as Vice-President, Helen Oldham as Secretary, and Andrew McLintock as Treasurer. Debbie Franke volunteered to be the Canteen Convenor, a role she fulfilled for several years.
Establishing the club was a gamble, as playing strips had to be ordered at a cost of approximately $3000 to be available in time for the season to commence. A sign-on day was eventually held, and 72 players registered with the club, leading to the formation of 7 teams in the Toowoomba Junior Soccer Association Inc. Multiple tasks had to be completed before the season started, including negotiating field sharing with the council and rugby club, as well as marking and maintaining the fields. The clubhouse was also shared with playgroups, art and gardening groups, and the rugby club.
As the community grew, a storage shed was built to accommodate the equipment needed by each club.
Over the years, Highfields Football Club has achieved significant milestones. Barry Franke coached the club's first Senior Men's team in 2007, leading them to the finals. In 2008, the club entered its first Colts U16/U18 team into the senior competition. The club was proud to have a Senior Men's Reserve and Colts team playing in the competition in 2009.
In 2004, the club celebrated its first leadingship win when the U13B Strikers emerged victorious.
Highfields Football Club has also produced talented players who have represented at higher levels. Kirstie Nicholls became a State Representative for Women's Soccer QLD in 2003 at the age of 12. Jordan Franke, daughter of Phil and Karen Franke, and former Highfields player Amy Mairs were selected for the girls U/13 State Junior Development Squad in 2007. Jordan Franke continues to excel in her soccer career, earning selection in prestigious tournaments.
Highfields Football Club Inc. is a vibrant and inclusive club that continues to serve the local community. With top-notch facilities, including five full-sized fields, a canteen, a clubhouse, and eight change rooms, the club provides an excellent environment for players of all ages and skill levels to enjoy the sport.
