Yes! Canterbury Shotokan Karate Club welcomes anyone, regardless of age or experience level. We have members of all ages, shapes, and sizes. Our club is especially great for complete beginners, as our members typically pass their first grading within three months of starting.
Is karate suitable for self-defence?
Absolutely. While it does take dedicated training to master specific techniques, karate is a useful martial art for self-defence. It not only improves your physical fitness and muscle tone but also boosts confidence, which is essential for self-defence.
Does karate have any benefits beyond physical fitness?
Yes, karate can have a positive impact on other aspects of your life as well. The combination of exercise and discipline in this martial art can be carried over into your working life, making you feel more capable and accomplished. Many of our members have reported feeling more able to carry out other tasks due to their karate training.

What are the fees for joining the club?
As of 2023, we offer two membership options. Option 1 requires 12 monthly payments by standing order, with adults paying 30 and students/juniors paying 20. 60. Option 2 is a pay-as-you-go option, with adults paying 7 per session and students/juniors paying 5.
Special training events and grading fees are separate and prepayments are non-refundable.
