Welcome to Bridport BJJ, a martial arts club and self-defence school located in Bridport, Dorset. Established in 2021, Bridport BJJ offers Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) classes and coaching for individuals aged 14 and above. Whether you are looking for a new social activity, effective self-defence training, a way to get in shape, or simply want to try out an exciting sport, Bridport BJJ is the place for you.
At Bridport BJJ, community is at the core of everything we do. We strive to create a safe and welcoming space for everyone, from beginners to advanced practitioners. We believe in embracing mistakes and fostering growth in all our members, regardless of their belt level. Our instructor, Mark Vickery, leads the team with passion and expertise.
By joining Bridport BJJ, you will have the opportunity to build confidence and character through hands-on learning. Our classes focus on teaching self-defence skills while also improving fitness and having fun. Additionally, you will have the chance to make lifelong friends through the shared struggle and camaraderie on the mats.
Safety is our priority at Bridport BJJ. All our staff members are First Aid Trained and hold full Safeguarding and DBS Certificates. Your well-being is important to us, and we strive to create a positive and nurturing environment for all our members.
Your journey with Bridport BJJ begins with a free trial class. During your first class, you will participate in a group warm-up that includes specific BJJ movements such as shrimping, break-falling, and pummeling. These techniques are essential for learning how to fall safely and move your hips on the ground.
After the warm-up, the instructor will demonstrate and discuss a series of techniques in a relaxed group setting. You will then pair up with an experienced member for drilling. Don't worry if everything feels new and unfamiliar our instructors will guide you step by step to ensure that you perform the techniques correctly and have a great time.
For your first week of training, you only need to wear a set of shorts and a t-shirt. We provide this flexibility so that you can experience BJJ without investing in a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Gi uniform right away. However, we recommend purchasing your own Gi after the first week to fully benefit from your training.
Hygiene is crucial at Bridport BJJ. We ask that you keep your nails well-trimmed, tie up long hair during class, and remove any piercings or jewellery to prevent injuries. It is also important to shower before and after class to minimise the risk of skin infection.
Our club follows some basic rules to ensure the safety and well-being of all our members. These rules include no twisting or grabbing fingers, no slamming or picking someone up and dropping them, no heel hooks or twisting the foot, no neck or spinal cranks, and no jumping techniques. We emphasise respect for your training partners' safety at all times.
