Tony, the organiser of Aorangi Ski Club, wants to share a note with the sports community. Aorangi Ski Club, one of the oldest ski, snowboard, and alpine sports clubs in Wellington, New Zealand, welcomes members from across the North Island. A highlight of Aorangi is providing accommodation on all three Mt Ruapehu ski fields with lodges at Iwikau Village on Whakapapa ski field, Ohakune township at Turoa ski field, and Tukino Ski field on the Desert Road side.
Tony emphasises that Aorangi values both families and individuals, ensuring there's a lodge for every mountain enthusiast. Whether you're looking for a club field adventure, some après-ski nightlife, or the convenience of skiing straight from the lodge to the lifts, Aorangi covers all bases.
Joining Aorangi Ski Club promises a rewarding experience with accommodation at Mt Ruapehu. The club spirit and camaraderie enhance the skiing experience and add much satisfaction to members' lives. The lodges cater to all ages, making it an excellent place for families to enjoy watching their children ski or snowboard while mingling with other members.
For those seeking more adventure, there's the option to climb to the summit and ski to the lodge at Tukino or vice versa. If you're interested in competition, Aorangi holds its own races and participates in ski racing events at Ruapehu. From the fun-focused Schnapps Cup at Tukino to the George Shield at Whakapapa aimed at encouraging kids to race, there's something for everyone.
When visiting the mountain, Tony stresses the importance of coming prepared for unpredictable weather. Essential items include windproof and waterproof outer clothing, warm undergarments, a sleeping bag (though lodges are warm and equipped with blankets), a pillowcase, and a bath towel. Also on the list are a woollen or polar fleece jersey and hat, polypropylene or woollen mittens or gloves, waterproof tramping or walking shoes, sunblock, lip balm, goggles or sunglasses, a torch, slippers for the lodge, drinks, nibbles, and any special dietary needs.
For those heading to Tukino and Iwikau, it's crucial to wear warm, waterproof gear and bring a backpack instead of a suitcase, as snow transportation can be tricky. Tony advises preparing a grab bag for emergency exits, including car keys, wallet, phone, medication, spectacles, and a torch. Keeping waterproof boots and a jacket by the bed is also recommended.
If you’re bringing your vehicle, note that cars can get buried in snow at Iwikau lodge on Whakapapa ski field and Tukino lodge (4WD only) at Tukino ski field. Ensure your vehicle is in good condition, especially the battery and electrical system. Add anti-freeze to the cooling system, park the car in gear, chock the wheels against the wind, and leave the handbrake off to prevent it from freezing.
Tony looks forward to welcoming current members and new faces alike to the Aorangi Ski Club for another fantastic season on the slopes.
