To Sensei Shodan Tim to Sensei Shodan Richard to Sensei Congratulations to all the Senseis, your hard work and dedication have paid off! Goju Ryu History: Goju Ryu is a traditional style of Karate that originated in Okinawa, Japan. It was created by Miyagi Chojun Sensei, who combined elements of the indigenous Okinawan martial arts and Chinese martial arts. The name “Goju” means “hard-soft,” which reflects the style's emphasis on both powerful striking techniques and fluid, circular movements.
Goju Ryu is known for its practical self-defence applications and its holistic approach to training, which includes physical, mental, and spiritual development. Kobudo: Miyagi Do Karate also incorporates the practise of Kobudo, which is the traditional Okinawan weapons system. Our students have the opportunity to learn various weapons such as the bo (staff), sai (daggers), and nunchaku (flail). Training in Kobudo not only develops weapon proficiency but also enhances overall coordination and body awareness.
Goju Ryu Kata: Kata are predetermined sequences of moves that simulate combat situations. They are a fundamental aspect of Goju Ryu training and serve as a repository of techniques and principles. Miyagi Do Karate places great emphasis on the precise execution and understanding of kata to develop proper body mechanics, timing, and focus.
