Australian Academy of Gracie Jiu Jitsu and Self Defence is a renowned sports club based in Perth, Western Australia. With a rich history dating back to 1925, the academy has been empowering individuals and families with self-defence skills for over nine decades. Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned practitioner, the academy welcomes everyone, regardless of their age or physical levels.
Led by Head Teacher Professor Paulo Tavares, a direct student of Rickson Gracie and former apprentice at the Original Gracie Academy in Brazil, the academy offers a comprehensive form of Gracie Jiu Jitsu. With more than 15 years of international experience, Professor Paulo Tavares has taught Gracie Jiu Jitsu across four continents and has introduced the art to the country of Indonesia.
The academy provides an exclusive online platform called My Kool Cat, which enhances the learning experience and allows members to manage their membership efficiently. This platform is accessible on both desktop and mobile devices, making it convenient for students to continue their training wherever they are.
The Gracie Jiu Jitsu programmes at the academy cater to various individuals and age groups. The Fundamentals programme is perfect for beginners, as it introduces them to the first steps of Gracie Self Defence, including stand-up and ground techniques. No full-contact sparring is allowed in this programme, with a focus instead on “Flowing Drills” and “Reflex Drills” to learn how to defend oneself in common situations.
There are also specific programmes designed for kids, teenagers, and ladies. The Samurai Kids programme provides self-defence classes in a fun and controlled environment, instilling confidence and discipline in kids aged five and up. The Ladie's Power programme empowers women by teaching them how to defend themselves against common forms of aggression. Additionally, the academy offers a programme tailored for teenagers, enabling them to learn self-defence skills while developing respect and focus.
