The Adelaide University Swing Dancing Club (AUSDC) is a student-run club at the University of Adelaide. Their aim is to promote, teach, and have a blast swing dancing. The club is open to everyone, including non-students.
Swing dancing is a fast-paced and dynamic dance style that originated as a social dance in Harlem, NYC during the 1920s – 1950s. It includes partnered and solo dance styles such as Lindy Hop, Charleston, Balboa, Blues, Shag, Tap, and Vernacular Jazz. AUSDC acknowledges and honours that these dance styles were created by Black Americans and people of African diasporic descent, and they are passionate about keeping their legacy alive.
The club holds beginner swing dancing classes weekly on campus during the university year. The classes take place on Tuesday nights at 6pm in the Exercise Studio in the Lady Symon Building. Each class covers different content, so participants can attend regularly or drop in when it suits them. The classes are open to everyone, regardless of dance level, age, or experience.
No partner is needed, and no previous experience is required.
In addition to classes, AUSDC hosts special events throughout the year, including movie nights and social dances. These events can be found on their Facebook and Instagram pages.
The club follows all the rules and guidelines set by the Adelaide University and Adelaide University Union for Clubs. They strive to create a safe, welcoming, accepting, and respectful environment for all participants. If anyone feels uncomfortable during a class or event, they are encouraged to speak to a teacher or committee member, or contact the club through social media or email.
AUSDC acknowledges the Kaurna people as the original custodians of the Adelaide Plains and the land on which the University of Adelaide's campuses are built.
Beginner swing dancing classes are held on Tuesday nights from 6-7pm in the Exercise Studio on the ground floor of the Lady Symon Building. Each class teaches the basic step of the dance and several moves to get participants out on the dance floor. Attendees are encouraged to bring a bottle of water, wear comfortable and non-restrictive clothing, and flat, closed-toe shoes. Experience is not required, and partners are not necessary but welcomed.
The cost of the classes is $10 for students/concession and $15 for others. Class passes are also available.
Join the Adelaide University Swing Dancing Club and experience the joy and excitement of swing dancing while making new friends and enjoying the vibrant dance community in Adelaide.
