Young People Afloat, located at Lackford Lake in Bury St Edmunds, is a youth sailing club led by a dedicated volunteer committee under the guidance of Chairperson John Smith. Their mission is clear: to teach young people, aged 9 to 18, the art of sailing. With instructors qualified to Royal Yachting Association (RYA) standards, members can expect top-notch training.
As an RYA-recognised teaching centre, Young People Afloat follows the RYA scheme, motivating members to undertake tests to master essential sailing skills. During the summer, the club hosts regattas and various events, giving members the chance to display their skills and gain valuable sailing experience.
Sailing sessions are held every Wednesday evening from 18:00 until dusk, running from April to September. The club prioritises safety with two safety boats on standby, operated by qualified RYA safety boat drivers. All participants are required to wear provided buoyancy aids at all times on the water.
Young People Afloat is affiliated with the Royal Yachting Association, St. Edmundsbury Sailing and Canoeing Association, and Suffolk Clubs for Young People, reinforcing their commitment to a secure and inclusive environment.
