Yoga Nilaya is a serene and welcoming Ashtanga yoga studio located in Ashgrove, Brisbane. The studio follows the traditional method of practise, which includes 5 days a week of self-practise known as Mysore style, and 1 day a week of guided practise led by the experienced teachers. This system allows students to advance at their own pace and cultivate a direct relationship with their teacher, resulting in improved physical and mental health.
At Yoga Nilaya, the practise of Ashtanga yoga goes beyond the physical body and focuses on connecting the breath with movement. The studio believes in adapting the practise to suit the individual, rather than forcing individuals to fit a specific mould. People of all backgrounds and abilities are welcome to find a space to explore and deepen their understanding of their own body and breath.
The shala at Yoga Nilaya is located in a residential home, so it is important for visitors to be mindful of their noise levels when arriving and departing. Visitors are advised to bring a yoga mat, wear comfortable clothing, tie up long hair, and bring a towel as the practise can be quite sweaty. Shoes are to be left outside the practise space, and phones should be turned off and kept away from the practise area. An open mind, a willingness to learn, and the ability to be honest with the teacher are also encouraged.
Mani is the dedicated teacher at Yoga Nilaya. With over 14 years of experience in Ashtanga yoga, Mani discovered a deep connexion to the practise at a young age. Mani has travelled to Mysore, India to practise under Paramguru Sharath Jois, the lineage holder of the Ashtanga yoga tradition, and was given Guruji's blessing to teach in 2022. Mani has also studied under renowned teachers such as Eileen Hall, Sharmila Desai, Dena Kingsberg, Richard Freeman, Danny Paradise, Kino McGregor, David Swenson, and Mark Robberds.
Through years of practise and study, Mani has developed a holistic understanding of yoga as a path that supports individuals through all stages of life, including injury, illness, pregnancy, and recovery.
Yoga Nilaya offers a variety of classes to suit different needs. In addition to Ashtanga yoga classes, the studio also offers pranayama classes for those interested in breathwork. Private and corporate yoga lessons are also available in Brisbane. Beginners are especially encouraged to join, with daily beginner classes tailored to meet the individual needs of each student.
