Karate has a rich history that traces back to the island of Okinawa. In 1609, when the Japanese Satsuma Clan invaded Okinawa, all weapons were banned, leading to the development of the native fighting style known as Okinawa-te. Due to strict laws, the practise of Okinawa-te was carried out secretly. Over time, Okinawans were exposed to other martial systems from China and Japan, further influencing the development of karate.
In 1917 and 1922, Master Funakoshi, the founder of Shotokan Karate, was invited to Japan to demonstrate his style. This marked the beginning of the popularisation of karate in Japan, with dojos being established in universities and the formation of the Japan Karate Association in 1955, with Master Funakoshi as Chief Instructor.
Yamashiro Kai Shotokan Karate Cornwall follows the teaching methods of Shotokan Karate, which emphasises the use of low stances, long attacks, and a variety of leg techniques. The training is structured to develop a strong foundation in karate, focusing on technique, discipline, and self-defence skills.
Whether you are a beginner or have prior experience in martial arts, Yamashiro Kai Shotokan Karate Cornwall welcomes individuals of all ages and skill levels to join and learn the art of Shotokan Karate in a friendly and supportive environment.
