Wing Chun International Basingstoke is a martial arts school located in Basingstoke, New Zealand. Specialising in the Chinese martial art of Wing Chun, the school offers classes for adults who are interested in self-defence and close-range combat techniques.
Wing Chun is a relatively young martial art that originated in southern China. According to legend, it was created by the Buddhist nun Ng Mui, who synthesised a compact form of Kung Fu to exploit weaknesses in other combat styles and give an advantage to smaller fighters. The style was named after Ng Mui's first student, Yim Wing Chun.
The school aims to pass on the knowledge of Wing Chun through a structured curriculum that focuses on six main subjects. The first subject is Forms, which are solo training frameworks that teach the correct positioning of the arms and legs. These forms act as a roadmap for students to navigate through the Wing Chun system.
The second subject is Pressure Testing System (PTS), which involves free fighting and sparring to develop skills in close distance combat and dealing with basic attacks. As students progress, they move on to more realistic training methods.
The third subject is Chi Sau, or the art of Sticking Hands. This training involves maintaining contact with an opponent and developing the necessary skills to defend oneself and open the attacker up at close quarters.
The fourth subject is Punches, which focuses on teaching students the unique punching technique of Wing Chun. The art punches with a vertical fist, and various drills and exercises are used to master this technique.
The fifth subject is Footwork, which is considered paramount in Wing Chun. The ability to move quickly on one's feet enhances balance, speed, and the chance of avoiding getting hit. Footwork sequences and drills help improve students' balance and coordination.
The final subject is Theory, which encompasses the set of theories, principles, and mottos that underpin the Wing Chun system. Although it is the last subject that students understand, it is considered the most important.
At Wing Chun International Basingstoke, the instructors are dedicated to passing on the knowledge and tradition of Wing Chun, following the lineage of Grandmaster Ip Man. The school provides a supportive and inclusive environment, welcoming students of all ages and fitness levels.
Whether you are a beginner looking to learn self-defence or an experienced martial artist looking to expand your skillset, Wing Chun International Basingstoke offers a comprehensive curriculum and expert instruction to help you achieve your goals in the art of Wing Chun.
