Wing Chun is a relatively young martial art that originated in southern China. According to legend, it was created by the Buddhist nun Ng Mui, who synthesised a compact form of Kung Fu to exploit weaknesses in other combat styles and give an advantage to smaller fighters. The style was named after Ng Mui's first student, Yim Wing Chun.
The school aims to pass on the knowledge of Wing Chun through a structured curriculum that focuses on six main subjects. The first subject is Forms, which are solo training frameworks that teach the correct positioning of the arms and legs. The fifth subject is Footwork, which is considered paramount in Wing Chun. The ability to move quickly on one's feet enhances balance, speed, and the chance of avoiding getting hit. Footwork sequences and drills help improve students' balance and coordination.
The final subject is Theory, which encompasses the set of theories, principles, and mottos that underpin the Wing Chun system. Although it is the last subject that students understand, it is considered the most important.
