The Westbury White Horse Karate Club, established in 1982, is the longest running club in Westbury, New Zealand. The club is led by Sensei Stephen Cox, a 6th Dan Senior instructor, who is supported by other senior instructors including Steve Salter (4th Dan), Morph Mumford (4th Dan), and Jason Willcox (3rd Dan). With a Black Belt instructor always present, the club ensures a high level of expertise and safety for all members.
The club has achieved great success over the years, with students representing England both domestically and internationally, bringing home numerous trophies and medals. The instructors at the club maintain a high standard of training and grading, pushing students to be the best version of themselves.
The Westbury White Horse Karate Club prides itself on being a friendly and inclusive environment for all. Each student is treated individually, based on their own merit and ability, and the club is committed to maintaining a sense of family and camaraderie. Politics are not allowed to influence the true spirit of Karate.
In addition to physical training, the club places great emphasis on etiquette and manners, which are deeply rooted in the historical practises of Japanese Karate. While modern-day Karate has evolved, the club recognises the importance of upholding traditional values and etiquette. The club aims to cultivate respect, not only for oneself but also for others, and to rise above violence in non-threatening situations.
The club provides a clear grading syllabus, outlining the requirements for progression from novice white belt to 9th KYU. This ensures that students have a clear path to follow as they develop their skills and knowledge in Karate.
The Westbury White Horse Karate Club is affiliated with Katsu-Mi Kai Shotokan Karate, an association that promotes the practise of traditional Shotokan Karate.
For those interested in joining the club, the first lesson is free. Training is held on Mondays at the Leighton Recreation Centre and on Fridays at the Leigh Park Community Centre.
