Mason Pickering wanted to share a quick heads-up about what's happening with the Whakatāne Swimming Club. Based in Whakatāne, this club is open to swimmers of all ages and stages. They offer different squads and training programmes, so there's something for everyone.
For the younger ones and those new to the sport, the Junior Squads are perfect. They're for swimmers up to 12 years old and get everyone from learn-to-swim programmes into more serious training. It's all about having fun, learning, and nailing those stroke mechanics.
The Senior Squads are more for the seasoned swimmers, generally 13 and up. This programme ramps up the fitness, speed, and race performance. It’s for those who’ve been with the club a bit longer.
If you're a teen or adult just wanting to keep fit without getting too competitive, there are Adult Fitness Classes. These classes welcome all fitness levels and are a great way to stay active.
Mason and the team have a vision to grow strong young adults through swimming. They believe in sticking through challenges and learning from them, helping kids become confident and capable by practising regularly.
The club has fantastic support from sponsors that help keep everything running. You can find them at 28 Short Street, and if you need to reach them, drop an email to coach.whakatanesc@gmail.com.
Keep an eye on their social media for the latest updates—there’s always something happening.
Mason leads the club as the head coach, with tons of experience across different aquatic sports. Jules Gladwin, the assistant coach, adds her skills in physiotherapy and swimming coaching to offer support to all swimmers.
The club’s got a governance team too, including the club captain, treasurer, and admin recorder, making sure everything runs smoothly.
The Whakatāne Swimming Club is part of the community, closely connected with the Whakatāne Aquatic Centre's Learn to Swim programme. They have over 150 members, and the squad programmes run at the Whakatāne Aquatic Centre are not-for-profit. Every bit goes back into the club, supporting all members no matter their swimming goals.
All new members get a free swimming assessment to figure out the best level for them. This takes about 10 minutes and happens at the Aquatic Centre. Remember, it’s about ability, not age. Once kids are ready post-Learn to Swim, they can join the club.
Mason and the team are all about providing a supportive and inclusive space for everyone. With their dedicated coaching and solid training programmes, they’re set on helping swimmers achieve their goals, build resilience, and fall in love with swimming.
Hope to see you all at the pool soon!
