A strong focus on player development and providing opportunities for all children, regardless of their skill level, to play and enjoy football.
The history of Wembdon FC dates back to 1998 when they became affiliated with the Somerset FA and entered their first youth league. Over the years, the club has experienced significant growth, starting with just 6 teams and 50 children training at the local YMCA centre. By 2006, the club had doubled its teams to 12, with over 140 children participating. In 2010, due to their continued growth, training moved to Bridgwater College, accommodating over 165 children and even including a ladies team.
Wembdon FC achieved FA Charter Standard Club status and became a part of the Wembdon Village Hall and Playing Fields Trust Committee. In recognition of their achievements, the club was named Charter Standard Club of the year for Somerset in 2014. They further received the Secretary and Welfare awards for their outstanding administration in 2015.
Throughout their journey, several players from Wembdon FC have gone on to make their mark in professional football. In 2016, one of their girls signed for Yeovil Ladies, while another player from the U14's joined Yeovil Academy. The club's success continued, and in 2017, they moved into their new home at The Green in Wembdon. This new facility provided them with improved amenities, including pitch sizes ranging from U6's to full-size 11-a-side pitches.
Currently, Wembdon FC boasts over 250 players spread across 15 teams, including three youth girl teams. The club takes pride in their coaching staff, with 30 level 1 qualified coaches, three Level 2 coaches, and two UEFA C level coaches. In February 2019, Wembdon FC was awarded the Chartered Standard Development Club status, confirming that they meet all FA regulations and standards for a Youth Football Club.
As one of the largest grassroots football clubs in the area, Wembdon FC is accredited by the FA since 2021 and hosts close to 500 children playing football every weekend. The club offers various opportunities, including ladies football in the Somerset girls leagues, age groups at every level in the Taunton youth league, and a pathway for players to progress from Wembdon juniors to colts and eventually to the men's senior teams.
The club's philosophy is centred around inclusivity, ensuring that every child who joins Wembdon FC can have fun, develop their football skills, and feel safe in a friendly environment. They prioritise values such as respect and teamwork, not just among players but also towards coaches and the opposition. Furthermore, Wembdon FC places a strong emphasis on player development, ensuring that all children, regardless of their ability, are given equal opportunities to enjoy and participate in football.
