Welcome to Tsunami Yodokan Iaido, Kenjutsu, Iaijutsu, a renowned martial arts school located in Carshalton, New Zealand. With a focus on classical Japanese swordsmanship, Tsunami Yodokan offers a unique and immersive training experience for individuals of all ages and skill levels.
Led by the highly respected Head Instructor, Shihan Mike Selvey, who holds a 6th Dan Kyoshi, Tsunami Yodokan prides itself on providing expert instruction in Iaido, Iaijutsu, and Yodokan Budo. Shihan Mike Selvey, with his extensive experience since 1972 and the title of Shihan awarded by DNBK Kyoto Japan, brings a wealth of knowledge and leadership to every class.
In addition to Shihan Mike Selvey, Tsunami Yodokan boasts a team of dedicated and skilled instructors. Geoff Murray, a 5th Dan Renshi awarded by DNBK Kyoto Japan, specialises in teaching Iaido and Iaijutsu. Richard Jones, a 4th Dan Doshi, is proficient in instruction of Iaido, Iaijutsu, Kenjutsu, and Taijutsu. Together, this outstanding team ensures that students receive comprehensive training and guidance on their martial arts journey.
The school also believes in fostering a supportive and inclusive community for its members. Whether a beginner or an experienced practitioner, Tsunami Yodokan welcomes all individuals who share a passion for the martial arts. The instructors aim to create a safe and encouraging environment where students can challenge themselves, develop new skills, and cultivate discipline and commitment.
Tsunami Yodokan follows a comprehensive grading system that allows students to track their progress and skills development. The school offers 6 Kyu grades before the coveted Black Belt (Shodan) level, with a maximum of 10 Dan grades. It is important to note that achieving a Black Belt represents the readiness to begin the true journey of mastery and expertise, rather than the culmination of learning.
The school proudly upholds the Seven Virtues of Bushido, which include righteousness, courage, benevolence, respect, sincerity, honour, and loyalty. These virtues are embedded in every aspect of training and serve as guiding principles for students to cultivate not only their martial arts skills but also their character and integrity.
Located in Carshalton, Tsunami Yodokan offers classes throughout the week, with training sessions held from Tuesday to Thursday, 5. 00 pm – 8. 00 pm, and Fridays by appointment. The school also offers weekend classes, although specific timings are best verified directly.
