Founder Philip Chi Fai Leung, originally from Hong Kong, is a seasoned martial artist and stunt performer, particularly in Hong Kong’s Kung Fu films. He is also a specialist in Intangible Cultural Heritage and a master of Hung Gar, bringing over 25 years of experience to the academy. His dedication to preserving this martial art makes him a valuable resource for anyone wanting to learn about Hung Gar.
The academy’s lineage goes back five generations to Grand Master Wong Fei Hung, including notable figures such as Lam Sai Wing, Chiu Kau, Chiu Wai, and Gam Bok Yin. Philip Chi Fai Leung continues this legacy as the current head of the academy.
Philip’s credentials extend beyond martial arts. He founded Hung Kuen Academy UK, led the Lion Dance Team in Hung Kuen Academy Hong Kong, and holds certifications from the British Martial Arts & Boxing Association and the International Martial Arts Alliance Australia. He’s also a certified coach under the Hong Kong Coach Accreditation Programme and has coordinated events for Kung Fu Corner Hong Kong. His work in action choreography for the Hong Kong movie Star Runner has been praised, and he has earned several medals in competitions.
The academy’s focus is on teaching Hung Gar as a traditional martial art, with an emphasis on self-defence, cultural appreciation, and wellness. They aim to teach a small, committed group of students, assessing each individually. Regular attendance and progress are necessary for continuation in the programme.
