Be prepared for sudden changes. ” Iaido emphasises the importance of being aware and prepared for any situation, always ready to draw the sword and respond quickly and efficiently. Through focused training and practise, practitioners of Iaido develop discipline, mental concentration, and physical coordination.
Jodo - the way of the stick, also known as “Jo-do” or "Jo-suburi,” is a Japanese martial art that utilises a 4-foot (125 cm) wooden staff. The training involves a series of form-based exercises, often performed in pairs, where one person uses the jo and the other simulates a real katana with a wooden sword. The practise of Jodo enhances physical fitness, agility, and hand-eye coordination. It also promotes strategy and timing, as well as a deep understanding of distance and rhythm.
Ryoshinkan Iaido and Jodo Dojo welcomes individuals of all ages and backgrounds to join in the training and development of these two martial arts. The club values and promotes equality and diversity, creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for everyone. Whether you are a beginner or have previous experience, the dojo provides a supportive atmosphere for learning and growth.
Ryoshinkan Dojo has two main branches located in Bermondsey, London and Byfleet, Surrey. The club is committed to fostering a sense of community and connexion among its members, offering opportunities for networking, collaboration, and cultural exchange.
To start training in Iaido and Jodo, individuals are encouraged to come and observe a training session first. This allows them to get a sense of the dojo's atmosphere and teaching style. Afterward, they can take out a three-month temporary membership with the British Kendo Association (BKA) at a cost of 10. The first month of training is offered for free.
In terms of equipment and clothing, beginners can start with loose training trousers and a t-shirt. Knee pads are necessary for the first training session and can be purchased separately. The dojo will lend the necessary equipment, such as practise swords and wooden staffs, for the initial three months. If individuals decide to continue their training, they will need to purchase the formal training wear consisting of a jacket (haori), pleated trousers (hakama), and a belt (obi).
The approximate cost for a basic set of these clothes is around 130. In addition, an iaito or mogito (metal training sword) for Iaido can be purchased for approximately 330, while a wooden jo and bokuto (sword) for Jodo will cost around 50.
