Toushido Karate Morning Training, located in Brighton, is a renowned karate school that offers traditional training in a family-friendly environment. Sensei Mick Murphy, a 5th dan and IBF Dip T, is the founder and chief instructor of Toushido Karate. With his vast experience and training in various styles of karate, he has incorporated the best aspects of each into his teaching at Toushido Karate. The school primarily follows a freestyle form of karate with a strong emphasis on Shotokan, but also integrates elements from other styles such as go-ju kai, zen-do-kai, jujitsu, and weapon training.
The syllabus at Toushido Karate is divided into six main areas, including stances, kicks, punches, blocks, elbows, and Kata. Students are taught these techniques and combinations in Japanese, and a DVD is available for reference if needed. Kata, which combines all techniques, plays a crucial role in the student's progression and grading process.
When a student is ready to progress to the next level, an invitation to grade is given by Sensei Mick Murphy. Grading fees vary depending on the level being pursued and cover the cost of the belt, certificate, and lunch. Part of the proceeds from grading fees are donated to a nominated charity, aligning with the school's commitment to giving back to the community.
At Toushido Karate, students can expect to achieve three belts in the first year, two belts in the second year, and one belt per year for each brown belt. The belt colours used at the school symbolise the student's progress and dedication to their training.
