TISKA Rugby is a thriving karate club located in Rugby, New Zealand. The club, headed by Chief Instructor Gursharan Sahota, offers classes for all ages and welcomes families to join. With a focus on developing balance, coordination, self-confidence, and discipline, TISKA Rugby provides a supportive and inclusive environment for beginners to start their karate journey.
Gursharan Sahota, originally from Kenya, discovered his passion for karate at the age of 14 when he joined a local club in Bedford, UK. After obtaining his black belt 1st dan (shodan) at the age of 18, he went on to compete in numerous kata and kumite events at national and international levels. His most significant experience came in 1984 when he travelled to Japan to train in a traditional Japanese dojo under Sensei Hirokazu Kanazawa. This experience cemented his dedication to karate and inspired him to open his own club in Luton/Dunstable in 1981.
In 1993, Gursharan formed TISKA (The Traditional International Shotokan Karate Association), which has now become one of the largest associations in the UK. He continues to teach over 35 classes per week in the UK and conducts master classes internationally. Gursharan's passion for karate extends beyond teaching, as he is actively involved in charitable projects, including funding trips for surgeons to operate on underprivileged children and supporting various educational initiatives in India.
TISKA Rugby caters to individuals of all abilities, from beginners to black belts. The club boasts a diverse membership, including children as young as five years old and families who have trained together for many years. In addition to regular training sessions, members have the opportunity to participate in association gradings, courses, and competitions throughout the year. These competitions are designed to accommodate all skill levels and age groups, allowing members to showcase their skills.
The club's instructor, Derek Brogie (6th Dan), founded TISKA Rugby Shotokan Karate in 1997 at the Ken Marriott Leisure Centre, which has since been replaced by the Queens Diamond Jubilee Leisure Centre. Karate training sessions are held once a week on Sunday mornings/afternoons, providing a convenient schedule for members.
