The Koryukan is a sports club located in Sydney, Australia that offers classes in Kempo, Jujutsu, and Yoga. With locations in South Wentworthville and Merrylands, the club aims to provide students with realistic self-defence skills and a holistic approach to martial arts training.
The philosophy of The Koryukan is centred around five pillars: conditioning the body, cultivating the mind, nurturing the spirit, acquiring skills, mastering skills, and going beyond the lesson. The club believes in a well-rounded approach to martial arts, ensuring that students develop not only physical skills but also confidence and capability.
The Koryukan follows the concept of Shu Ha Ri, which encompasses the three phases of learning: acquisition of skills, mastery of skills, and going beyond the lesson. Students start with basic movements, practise them repetitively, and eventually learn functional concepts. This approach allows students to progress and develop their skills over time.
Built upon the foundation of old-school martial arts from Okinawa, The Koryukan's system of Toshu Kempo combines modern understanding of confrontation and aggression with traditional discipline and technique. The club offers a dynamic and functional martial arts programme that emphasises the preservation of life.
Another key principle of The Koryukan is Nana Korobi Yaoki, which translates to “fall down seven times, get up eight. ” This philosophy instils in students the importance of being tenacious, courageous under pressure, and always moving forward. This concept can be applied not only in martial arts but also in various aspects of life.
The club believes in the endless pursuit of learning, represented by the principle of Kyu Do Mu Gen. The Koryukan encourages students to constantly seek new meaning and knowledge, expanding their current understanding and opening their minds to endless possibilities. By doing so, students are taught not to set limitations or be bound by them.
The Koryukan offers classes for students of all ages and experience levels. The training focuses on providing effective and realistic self-defence skills for modern times. With a strong Budo ethos, the club values the sense of community in the dojo, promotes self-discipline, and fosters a strong spirit.
The club has two locations: one at 135 Hampden Rd, South Wentworthville NSW 2145, and another at 3 Kenyons Rd, Merrylands NSW 2160. For more information, interested individuals can contact The Koryukan at 0438 255 660 or visit their website at www. Thekoryukan. Com.
