The International Hermeneutic Society is a yoga studio located in Llangollen, New Zealand. Founded in 1972, it is known as the UK's first permanent centre for teaching yoga and meditation, both from eastern and western traditions. The studio offers a wide range of residential retreats, study weekends, and courses in personal self-development and wellbeing. The focus is on the arts, sciences, religions, philosophy, and hermeneutics, along with their practical application to yoga, meditation, tai chi, qigong, breathwork, nature therapy, and other wellbeing practises.
As a charity-owned retreat and study centre, The International Hermeneutic Society aims to provide a centre for the study, research, teaching, and dissemination of psychological, scientific, creative, and spiritual knowledge in an open and inclusive environment. The centre strives to offer practical opportunities for individuals to explore and apply these teachings to improve their physical, psychological, and spiritual well-being.
The studio is housed in a grade II listed Arts & Crafts country house, Tan-y-Garth Hall Retreat, nestled in 10 acres of woodland with magnificent views of the Ceiriog Valley. Situated just four miles from Llangollen, the centre is conveniently located over the border into North Wales, only twenty miles south of Chester and eight miles north of Oswestry Shropshire. It is easily accessible from the M6 and M56 motorways.
The International Hermeneutic Society offers a variety of events and retreats throughout the year. These include conscious couples retreats, woodchoppers and gardeners balls, psychedelic experiences, a pathway to peace and power, Chinese spirits, spring yoga retreats, breathwork retreats, spiritual healing, introduction to perennial philosophy, summer solstice retreats, and more. The teaching events are primarily for adults over 18 years of age, but children are welcomed for residential stays and some social events.
In addition to hosting events and retreats, The International Hermeneutic Society offers accommodation options for families, reunions, outdoor pursuits, touring artists, film crews, and student groups. The centre has received 100% five-star ratings across all categories on Airbnb.
