The Addington Golf Club, located in Croydon, is a renowned golf club that offers a splendid course designed by John Frederick Abercromby in 1913. This exceptional course provides a thrilling and challenging experience for golfers of all skill levels. From the hilltop tees at the 14th and 16th holes, players can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the metropolis. The fairways wind through a lush landscape of mature pine and birch trees, creating an intimate atmosphere in contrast to the grand cityscape backdrop, featuring prominent landmarks such as the Crystal Palace, Natwest Tower, Canary Wharf, and the Shard.
The history of The Addington Golf Club is rich and fascinating. The club was established on 10 July 1913, with the incorporation of the Addington Golf Syndicate, backed by a share capital of 1000. JF Abercromby, an accomplished golfer with no prior experience in course design, serving as the leading signatory of the syndicate. Abercromby had successfully managed the construction of the Worplesdon and Coombe Hill courses, and The Addington became his finest masterpiece.
He remained closely associated with the club until his passing in 1935.
The construction of the original 'old' course at The Addington was not without controversy. Just a month after the syndicate's incorporation, a local newspaper reported on the development, stating, “New golf grounds, like new picture palaces, are springing up apace. I understand the latest intention is to provide a golf ground in Addington Park, where the shades of previous archbishops may protest in vain against this sacrilege. ” The article also alluded to the exclusivity of the club, stating, “I understand the use of this ground is to be strictly confined to people of a very high circle and indeed that no one under a peer of the realm is to be allowed to peer over those realms of past Episcopal glory.
” This account turned out to be accurate as The Addington Golf Club quickly became one of the most esteemed clubs near London. Its members were of such high-standing that it acquired the nickname “Royal Addington,” and in 1937, King George VI even became the Club's Patron.
