Te Atatu Roosters Rugby League Club, based in Auckland, New Zealand, stands as a stalwart in regional rugby league. With a storied history, the Roosters have significantly shaped the sport locally.
The exact origins of the "Roosters" name remain unclear, with theories linking it to the former Eastern Suburbs Roosters Club and the translation of Te Atatu, meaning “the early morning.”
The Roosters have a legacy of pioneering achievements, including being the first Auckland club to compete in Blenheim in 1974 and the first New Zealand team to play on Norfolk Island in 1968. This tradition of excellence is further marked by producing 12 Kiwis, such as Dennis Williams, John Wilson, Dean Orr, and Robbie Paul, who have all represented New Zealand at the highest level.
Dennis Williams, in particular, is a pivotal figure in the club’s history. Joining the Roosters in 1959, he made his Auckland senior debut at 14 and became the youngest Kiwi at 17 during the 1971 tour to Great Britain. Williams later captained the Kiwis against Wales at 20 and transitioned into coaching, remaining a dedicated supporter of the club.
Te Atatu Roosters continue to focus on nurturing talent and offering rugby league opportunities for all ages. They provide diverse programmes and competitions, with their teams actively competing in local and regional leagues.
