Tatenhill Aikido Club, located in Burton on Trent, Staffordshire, is a non-competitive Japanese martial arts school that focuses on the practise of Aikido. Aikido, developed by Morihei Ueshiba in the early 1900s, translates to “the way of harmony with the force and principle of nature” in Japanese. It is derived from Japan's traditional Budo and goes beyond the realm of martial arts, incorporating spiritual growth into its teachings.
Founded in 1986 by the late Michael Holloway, 6th Dan Shihan, the dojo was named “I Shin Juku” by T K Chiba, 8th Dan Shihan, which means “house of one heart. ” Tatenhill Aikido Club is a member of Scottish & Borders Birankai. Chief instructor Richard Edmunds Sensei, a 6th Dan and senior teacher, leads the dojo. He is also part of the teaching committee of Scottish & Borders Birankai.
Edmunds Sensei began his training in 1989 with Michael Holloway Shihan and spent a year as an uchideshi (inside student) to T K Chiba Sensei in San Diego, California, as part of an Aikido teacher training programme.
At Tatenhill Aikido Club, weapons training is an integral part of the practise. Aikido's movements and principles are rooted in Japanese weapons work, and the club focuses on the use of the bokken (wooden sword) and jyo (wooden staff). Additionally, the club offers classes in Iaido, which involves learning to use the Japanese sword, or Katana.
The class schedule at Tatenhill Aikido Club is as follows: sessions are held on Tuesdays from 6:00 pm to 7:15 pm and on Thursdays at 6:15 pm. The fees for each class are 6. 00, with a discounted rate of 3. 00 for students and the unwaged.
Membership, which includes BAB insurance coverage, is 25. 00 per year or 15. 00 for students and the unwaged.
