John, the organiser of the Sutton Mariners Sailing Club, wanted to share some information about this remarkable community. Situated in Sutton, the club has proudly affiliated with the RYA and boasts a rich sailing heritage spanning 35 years. Over the years, it has become a bustling hub for sailing enthusiasts.
John ensures the club primarily focuses on promoting sailing and boating, whether it's sail or power. The club provides excellent opportunities for members to study seamanship. There’s more than just sailing; the club also offers various social and recreational activities. Many members enjoy attending club nights to learn about different aspects of boating and listen to engaging talks.
Despite the nearest coast being roughly 50 miles away, the Sutton Mariners have seen impressive growth. Their membership has risen by 10 percent, bringing the current total to over 67. This demonstrates that sailing’s appeal remains strong, even in more landlocked regions. The members, ranging from their mid-30s to mid-80s, come from diverse professions and backgrounds, some even internationally.
While the club doesn't have a dedicated clubhouse or extensive assets, John has succeeded in fostering a close-knit community. The club organises sailing rallies throughout the summer, uniting members from various areas in their shared passion. This camaraderie was evident during their 35th-anniversary celebration, which included a fish supper, performances from the club’s shanty group “Mariner's Mates,” and a memorable group photo of more than 40 members, including some of the founding members.
John also coordinates annual photographic competitions that invite members to showcase their artistic talents. The club celebrates these captivating images, honouring the skill and creativity within their community.
