Studio Air Pilates & Aerial Art is a gym located in Swindon, New Zealand. It specialises in equipment and mat-based Pilates as well as aerial circus skills. The studio is open to participants of all levels, from complete beginners to industry professionals.
Although Pilates and Aerial may seem like distinct disciplines, they are closely intertwined. Many professional performance companies, including dance and circus, now incorporate regular Pilates training to align and strengthen the body for injury prevention and rehabilitation. Similarly, those who practise Pilates can utilise their control and skills within the more creative and fun environment of aerials.
The concept of Studio Air was born with the aim of providing a centre of excellence for both Pilates and aerial training. The boutique studio prides itself on maintaining high quality and professionalism. This is achieved through expert teaching, industry-leading equipment, and a bespoke training facility.
Studio Air currently offers a variety of classes and private lessons. For Pilates, classes are available in mat, reformer, Cadillac, and mixed equipment. Aerial enthusiasts can choose from classes in aerial hoop (Lyra), aerial fabrics (silks), and static trapeze. The studio also hosts regular workshops on topics such as stretching and conditioning, handstands, and aerial straps.
The studio is led by Kelly Wimshurst, the director and one of the instructors. Kelly has an extensive background as a professional dancer, having trained locally with the Swindon Academy of Dance and later at The Royal Ballet. She has over 10 years of experience teaching Pilates and is trained in Stott Pilates, specifically in mat, reformer, and Cadillac. Kelly has also specialised in pre and post-natal Pilates, Zenga, arc barrel, and supplementary small equipment.
In 2013, Kelly discovered her passion for aerial arts and has since become an accomplished aerialist. She has trained in aerial hoop with Spin City (UK) and in aerial silks and static trapeze with the New England Centre for Circus Arts/Nimble Arts (US). Kelly is known for her dynamic classes, extensive knowledge of anatomy, and expertise in stretching and conditioning.
