Storas Uibhist is a community-owned company that manages the 93,000-acre South Uist Estate, which includes the Outer Hebridean islands of Eriskay, South Uist, and parts of Benbecula. Since its establishment in 2006 through a community buy-out, Storas Uibhist has been dedicated to prioritising the interests and well-being of the islands' residents. Their overarching goal is to develop and support the natural, social, and economic assets of the islands to create a vibrant and sustainable economy, reverse population decline, protect local crofting practises, and generate employment opportunities for future generations.
One notable initiative of Storas Uibhist is the distribution of a portion of the revenues from the Loch Carnan wind farm to organisations and individuals within the community. These funds are used for developments, initiatives, and businesses that will bring about economic, social, or cultural benefits to the community. Through this community fund, Storas Uibhist aims to foster a stronger and more resilient local economy.
Crofting, an integral part of the community, is also a major focus for Storas Uibhist. Over 95% of the South Uist Estate's land is under crofting tenure, ensuring secure tenure and fair rents for its inhabitants. Storas Uibhist collaborates with local and national bodies to manage and support the islands' crofting system.
Renewable energy plays a vital role in Storas Uibhist's efforts towards sustainability. The construction of three 2. 3 MW wind turbines in Loch Carnan in 2013 has not only generated renewable energy but also provided an income that is reinvested into further development projects for the community.
In 2015, Storas Uibhist also spearheaded the construction of a new marina in Lochboisdale. This infrastructure has facilitated the expansion of leisure sailing, fishing, and industrial shipping in the islands. Additionally, the development has opened up new land for commercial and housing units, further contributing to the economic growth of the area.
The 120-year-old Askernish Golf Course, restored by local volunteers in 2005 with the support of Storas Uibhist, is another significant venture. In 2017, Storas Uibhist was entrusted with the management and further development of the course. This golf course attracts enthusiasts from around the world and offers a unique sporting experience.
Storas Uibhist also operates and owns the Grogarry Lodge & Sporting, a luxurious 19th-century sporting lodge. The lodge is utilised by sporting parties and is available for catered and self-catering accommodation, as well as for large functions and community events. Gamekeepers ensure that all sporting activities are conducted sustainably and in alignment with environmental regulations and the interests of the local community.
With the island's many lochs, South Uist is renowned for providing some of the finest wild Brown Trout, Sea Trout, and Salmon fishing in the United Kingdom. Storas Uibhist's land management and gamekeeping staff work tirelessly to ensure the sustainability of fish stocks through collaboration with the local community, as well as national agencies.
Storas Uibhist is a dynamic organisation committed to delivering social and economic regeneration for the islands of Benbecula, Eriskay, and South Uist. Through their various initiatives, they strive to enhance the quality of life for the community and promote the natural assets of the area.
