Paul Edwards, the organiser, would like to share some updates with the sports community about the Stafford & Stone Canoe Club, a friendly, volunteer-led club based in Stone, United Kingdom. Since 1973, this club has introduced many local residents to competitive canoe slalom. The club has developed top paddlers who have represented Stafford and Stone at both national and international levels.
The club's facility is located on the River Trent, thanks to the dedication of the passionate volunteer coaches and helpers. These individuals provide excellent training, guidance, and support to paddlers of all ages and skill levels.
In 1972, Ken Langford, a former British Slalom Champion and GB Canoe Slalom paddler, moved to Stafford and began training on the River Trent at Stone. He and fellow GB Team paddlers and Munich Olympians laid the foundation for what has become a remarkable club. Since its inception, the club has produced athletes who have represented their country at the Olympic games.
For those interested in exploring the sport, the club offers Taster Sessions for beginners, ideal for ages 9 to 11. These sessions are conducted in a safe and supportive environment.
The club has a proud history of producing Olympians. Canoe Slalom has been an Olympic event since 1972, and the club has been instrumental in the journey of several Olympians. Lizzie Neave, who competed at the London Olympics in 2012, began her paddling career at Stafford & Stone Canoe Club. She remembers the opportunities to paddle, compete, make friends, and enjoy a lively and supportive club environment.
The club is also involved in organising various events and races, locally and internationally. They offer coaching positions, races, and slaloms, giving paddlers opportunities to showcase their skills. Fundraising and grant applications support the club’s initiatives and promotion of the sport.
Paul invites everyone to join Stafford & Stone Canoe Club, an inclusive and welcoming community that offers the excitement of canoe slalom. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced paddler, the club provides the resources, coaching, and support to help you achieve your goals.
