The St Edmundsbury Sailing & Canoeing Association, a local sailing club, is gearing up for an exciting 2023 season at Lackford Lake, just 5 miles northwest of Bury St Edmunds. With the season set to kick off on Saturday 25th March and run until the beginning of November, the club has planned a range of events that will surely pique the interest of sailing enthusiasts.
Every Sunday, the club will host exhilarating dinghy racing, providing members with an opportunity to test their skills on the water. For those looking for a more laid-back experience, social sailing and kayaking sessions will be available on most days. But perhaps the most highly anticipated event of the season is the 10th Antigua Sailing Day Regatta, taking place on Sunday 11th June. This regatta is a fantastic celebration of 'Antigua Sailing Week' and has received generous support from the Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority.
With an increasing number of individuals seeking outdoor activities in the local area, membership of the St Edmundsbury Sailing & Canoeing Association has seen a remarkable fifty percent growth in recent years. In response to this demand, the club has expanded its training and hire fleet, offering a wide range of sailing dinghies, kayaks, and stand up paddleboards (SUPs). To ensure top-quality instruction, the club has brought on board a professional RYA Senior Instructor, who will oversee the sailing courses available for both adults and youths throughout the season.
Additionally, the club's disabled sailing section, WASH Sailability, has experienced a surge in participation, now offering sessions three days a week. The opportunities for canoeing and kayaking have also expanded, with weekly training sessions on the lake and a group of enthusiastic paddlers exploring rivers and waterways in East Anglia.
Thanks to increased income and funding, the St Edmundsbury Sailing & Canoeing Association has been able to enhance its onshore facilities. A new picnic area, fresh clubhouse furniture, and improved storage facilities have been added, providing members with comfortable surroundings while they enjoy their time at the club.
