Established in 1994, the club is the result of the amalgamation of the Hinds and Mayfield Rugby Football Clubs, which served the southern part of the Mid-Canterbury province. The official affiliation of the Hinds club took place in 1922, laying the foundation for the club we see today.

In 2017, Southern RFC fielded an impressive 13 teams, ranging from Under 8s to Seniors and Golden Oldies. The club serves the rural area south of the Ashburton River, falling under the jurisdiction of the Mid-Canterbury Rugby Union. It maintains four well-maintained playing fields at the Hinds Domain and two in Mayfield.

The Hinds clubrooms feature excellent facilities for changing, showering, and even floodlights for night training sessions.
