In terms of the club's history, South Canterbury Gymsports Inc. , formerly known as Highfield Gymnastics Club, was established in 1980. Initially operating from the Highfield School hall, the club later relocated to a larger premise at the table tennis facility on Coonoor Rd due to its growing membership. In June 2011, the club underwent a name change to become South Canterbury Gymsports (SCG).
Subsequently, in 2015, SCG moved into its dedicated Gymsports facility, known as the South Canterbury Movement Centre. This move provided the club with additional space and resources to further expand its offerings and accommodate more members.
